Qantas Frequent Flyer Account
Starting off with the very basics… You need to get a Qantas Frequent Flyer account. If you don’t have one, check out our blog here so you can sign up for free!
Search Your Desired Flight
Next, we want to search for your desired flight. For todays example, we will look at Brisbane to Los Angeles. Head to the Qantas site and enter your flight requirements. For our example, it will look something like this:
Locate Classic Reward Seats:
This next step is the key. Check to see if there are any classic reward seats for the flight you want. Don’t be too strict on dates encase that flight books out before you do the next steps. If there are classic reward seats available, you’ll see that they cost points + a few hundred in taxes. See below:
How to Get The Points To Book The Flight:
- You can earn these points through various methods (check out our other blogs on this topic here)
- OR you can directly buy them from Qantas.
Swapping Cash for Points:
Since we are talking about getting massive Qantas Business Class discounts when using cash, we will assume you need to purchase the points.
Head to the top up points section & buy the amount you need for the flight assuming it represents value.
The Savings:
For this example Brisbane to Los Angeles, buying the ticket with cash cost $14,724…. If you buy 110K Points, it costs $2,990 from the Qantas Website…. meaning your total cost to buy this ticket is $2,990 (to acquire points) + $338 in taxes = $3,328
Usually to buy the ticket it would be $14,724 but here we can book the same seat for $3,328 meaning we just save 75% off the cash price!
The Catch:
Why is there always a catch?!
The good news is… if you know what you’re doing, the catch isn’t a big deal.
