Qantas Health Insurance: The Deal

I took a deep dive into the fine print and discovered the Silver Cover + Extras package. The promised return was about 33,000 Qantas Points, which, for a single policyholder and traveler like me, was appealing given there are basically no points earned on my current policy with Bupa. The cost? Surprisingly comparable to my existing Bupa plan. A couple of extra dollars a week separated the existing policy to one where I would get 30K+ Qantas points. The coverage? Similar enough that it didn’t feel like I was losing out on much. For someone who is fairly young & healthy, the differences were not too much of a concern given the similarities.

The Application Process

The transition process was surprisingly smooth. Qantas Health made it as easy as a straightforward online application that took less than 10 minutes. By providing my Bupa details, they handled the switch. Plus, all my waiting periods from Bupa were honoured, meaning no re-serving time for benefits already accrued. No complicated paperwork, just a simple, streamlined process.

Set Up for Future Bonuses

The decision to switch wasn’t just about the current deal. I have had a great experience with Bupa and do plan to return in the future. With Bupa’s tendency to offer bonuses for new customers (or those who haven’t held a policy in the last 12 months), I’m positioning myself to potentially switch back after a year. I’ll get the immediate benefit of a Qantas Points bonus with Qantas Health now and in the future can leverage Bupa’s potential offers after a year.

Before the First Claim

A crucial aspect yet to be tested is filing a claim with Qantas Health Insurance. As I write this, I’ve fortunately not needed to, so I can’t speak to that experience just yet. This will be the real test of whether the switch was worth it.

Summary

By spending less than 10 minutes in administrative tasks to transition to a new plan that mirrors the cost and coverage of my old policy appears to be a prudent choice. Additionally, this move strategically positions me to benefit from future bonuses offered by Bupa. Reflecting on this, I am satisfied with the decision and the prospects it brings. Of course with everything discussed on this site, you need to do your own research and consider if this would be suitable for you. This is not product advise and it is solely a review on our experience.
